M-F 9am-6pm *Required to work some evenings or weekends as needed for recreational programming.*

JOB SUMMARY

The Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and coordinates goal oriented programs for children and youth in the residential and Extended Day Treatment programs. She/he is responsible for therapeutic recreational programming seven days a week that enables the children and youth to achieve their optimal level of intellectual, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual potential. The therapeutic recreation coordinator works in concert with the child and youth treatment teams to ensure a consistent treatment approach.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and implements scheduled recreational activities seven days a week, including classes, games, music, entertainment, skill-building activities, sports, etc.
  • Ensures that programs are age-appropriate and geared towards helping the children and youth build skills.
  • Assists in organizing and implementing special events including holiday celebrations, monthly birthday parties, cookouts and other special events involving clients, families, guests and the community. Assists with making arrangements, and coordinating with other departments as needed regarding client attendance and availability, and food services to plan menu for those attending events.
  • Plans and schedules various trips and community outings such as educational field trips, eating out, special events, and outside functions. Accompanies clients to the trips and ensures their participation. Communicates all details and coordinates logistics of the trip with the team.
  • In conjunction with clinician, plans individualized, one-to-one programming for clients who need specialized programming due to safety issues.
  • Responsible for completing/ensuring that all therapeutic recreation documentation is completed in clients EMR in Care Logic .
  • Reports unusual or inappropriate behaviors to program staff and communicates clients concerns and responses to interventions to the treatment team
  • Completes recreation assessments and updates progress notes. Attends client treatment team meetings as needed
  • Seeks input from team and clients in order to develop activities.
Experience and Skills

REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE OF: activity interest assessments; needs and abilities of the population; computer and typing/data entry skills; Microsoft Office applications.
SKILL IN: communicating orally and in writing with clients, families, staff, other departments and leadership; demonstrating tact and sensitivity while working with clients; providing encouragement, support and consultation to team members; ability to successfully engage clients in activities, manage behavioral difficulties. CTRS Certification preferred.

Required to work some evenings, weekends and holidays as needed for recreational programming.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors in therapeutic recreation or related field required, Masters degree preferred

Additional Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year full-time experience in Therapeutic Recreation.
  • Clean and valid drivers license and three consecutive years of driving experience
  • Ability to obtain a Public Service License, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certification, and American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Good physical coordination and stamina for energetic leadership.
  • Ability to relate well to people, conveying warmth and interest in residents, families, and fellow staff members.
  • Demonstrated cooperation with personnel, volunteers, and community members.
  • Demonstrated initiative in creation new programs and approaches to care.
  • Physically able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations, i.e. must be able to supervise groups of children and perform physical intervention if required; must be able to move freely from place to place without restrictions.
