Position Summary:

The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor is responsible for administrative and technical supervision of a group of respiratory therapists, providing medically prescribed treatments under direction and supervision of Attending or CMO. Primary emphasis of this role is on supervision of the staff assigned to patient treatment in assigned area, ensuring the best possible therapy coverage. The position provides maintenance of all continuous oxygen and humidity therapy and long-term artificial ventilation care; and insuring that varied therapy equipment is appropriately maintained. Substantial exercise of responsibility required across departments/ functions of the Jackson Health System. Execution of responsibility involves recommending significant policy changes in operational matters for the unit. The Supervisor of Respiratory Therapy may function in a dual capacity (as needed) by performing job duties of a Registered Respiratory Therapist. While functioning as RRT, all independently performed activities must be under direction of attending physician or CMO.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assigns the daily work schedule to shift personnel.
  • Evaluates the quantity and quality of work accomplished on assigned shift.
  • Prepares employee performance evaluations.
  • Schedules staff personnel, including vacations, holidays, etc., and guarantees adequate coverage of the clinical and critical care areas at all times.
  • Troubleshoots all clinical and equipment problems.
  • Must have good knowledge of the function of all available respiratory therapy equipment in the department and of the clinical protocols in each unit.
  • Participates in budget preparation and requisitioning of equipment supplies as needed.
  • Assists with employee screening, training and regulatory compliance.
  • Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
  • The Respiratory Therapy Supervisor assigned to Holtz Pediatric units may attend ground and air transports for Pediatric and Neonatal patients as needed to cover the transport team.
  • Assists with patient assignments should there be a staffing shortage; this includes responding to the PEDS ER, NICU, PICU and all other areas under the responsibility and care of the Pedi Respiratory Care Department, or any other assigned specialty area.
  • Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
  • Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  • Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Generally requires 5 to 7 years of related experience. Management experience is strongly preferred.

Education:

  • Associate's degree in related field is required.
  • Employees hired after 3/1/2020 must have a Bachelor's degree.
  • Any employee who will be performing Point of Care and testing in the Operating Room, NICU, PICU, Pedi-ER, Cath Lab and/or Interventional Radiology areas, the educational degree must be verified at the time of hire.
  • Minimum education level required to be verified is Associate's degree.

Credentials:

  • Valid Florida State Respiratory License and Registered Respiratory Therapist from the National Board for Respiratory Care is required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Any employee who works in areas Pediatrics (NICU/Pediatric ER) must have current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required based on business unit or departmental need.
  • STABLE certificate is preferred for RRT's assigned to NICU.
