Characteristics of the Class: Under the supervision of the school Principal, complete various instructional support functions assigned by an ASHA-Certified Speech-Language Pathologist in order to develop pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication purposes; work with students who have severe speech and language disorders as well as physical, emotional, and learning disabilities; and perform other related duties as assigned. Examples of Duties: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the class.

  • Review annual speech goals and objectives related to student cases.
  • Collect materials and assist Speech/Language Pathologist in conducting speech/language screenings and recording progress as well as strengths and areas for development.
  • Provide individual and small group therapy; assist in scheduling classroom activities and collaborate with the Special Education Team to assist in implementing treatment; follow documented therapy plans and protocols.
  • Collect accurate individual student ata during therapy sessions, record daily speech attendance, maintain records and notes, and assessment protocols and prepare for istrict review.
  • Acquire and transcribe speech samples to assist in determining eligibility for future treatment recommendations.
  • Prepare therapy materials and/or equipment for use in classroom and therapy activities and perform maintenance on and check operation of altermative and Augmentative Communication devices for proper functioning.

Qualifications: Training and Experience: Completion of four years high school and completion of a certified program of stuy designed to perpare the stuent to be a Speech and Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). Knowledge of: Human anatomy and physiology; normal speech, language, and hearing development; language disorders, articulation disorders, and acquired disorders and rehabilitation techniques; hearing disorders and aural rehabilitation techniques; phonetics; clinical methods and procedures; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; record keeping practices and procedures.

Ability and Skill to: Deal effectively with attitudes and behaviors of students; communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing; organize and complete tasks on schedule; select, prepare, and present materials effectively; maintain student performance documentation; administer behavior and treatment program; provide effective implementation of treatment objectives; operate standard office equipment including computer, copier, and fax machine; establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, supervisors, school staff, and respond to student requests and needs and select appropriate techniques. Licenses/Certificates/Special Requirements: State Certification from the Speech Pathology and Audiology Board of California.

Must possess State Certification from the Speech Pathology and Audiology Board of California. (SLPA Certification)
