The University of South Alabama Physical Therapy Department is seeking candidates with a shared vision of educating and impacting future physical therapists and the future of the physical therapy profession. Our core faculty have a common belief that educating within their area of expertise can inspire and motivate physical therapy students to become leaders within the field of physical therapy and create lifelong learners who desire to make their patients, communities, and profession better.
We desire team-oriented individuals with expertise focused in orthopedics or neurological areas, though all specialty areas will be considered. Applications for a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor are currently being accepted. Primary responsibilities include teaching in one's area of expertise, maintaining a productive scholarly agenda, and providing service as required by the department, college, or university. Participation in clinical faculty practice is also available. Candidates must be committed to learner-centered education and working cooperatively with faculty and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Eligible for physical therapy licensure in Alabama.
Academic doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D. or D.Sc.) in physical therapy or a related field at the time of appointment. ABD candidates will be considered with degree completion by January 1, 2026.
Established and active independent research record supporting the physical therapy field with potential to secure external grant funding.
*At the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must provide evidence of an established research agenda (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, grants, etc.) and a history of effective teaching.
Minimum two years teaching experience in an accredited physical therapy education program preferred.
Minimum two years of physical therapist clinical practice.
Board certification within specialty area preferred.
Residency and/or Fellowship training preferred.
THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL THERAPY at the University of South Alabama, with a 40-plus year history, offers an accredited, well-established and highly respected entry-level DPT program. The academic program is developed, managed, and implemented by the Department's seven full-time core faculty members. The curriculum is delivered over eight continuous semesters using innovative teaching strategies, such as patient simulation and community-based service learning, that foster student engagement and clinical reasoning. Team teaching is utilized to promote delivery by faculty with content expertise. Innovative teaching and faculty development are supported through multiple university resources, including the USA Simulation Program, the Innovation in Learning Center, and the Office of Community Engagement. The Department is housed in the Health Sciences building with close proximity to other departments in the College of Allied Health, the College of Nursing, the College of Medicine, and the Biomedical Library. Opportunities for collaborative interdisciplinary research, teaching, and practice exist within these colleges and other academic units as well as within the growing number of USA Health hospitals and clinics. The Department of Physical Therapy houses research labs with diverse equipment, including a Vicon motion analysis system, BTE Primus, TecnoBody Walker View treadmill system, Owens Recovery Science Blood Flow Restriction system, and a Korr metabolic system, that can be used for clinical research and practice. The department also houses an on-site faculty practice clinic with opportunities for outpatient clinical practice.
