DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK

A Recreation Specialist II, Therapeutics, under general supervision, performs as a staff member responsible to a Center Director in charge of a Therapeutic Recreation Program. The Specialist II shall conduct activities in Therapeutic recreation programs.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following illustrates examples of some of the essential duties and responsibilities of the Recreation Specialist II - Therapeutics. There may be other essential functions, not listed below, in order to accomplish the tasks as presented by the Supervisor.

  • Assists the Center Director in planning, coordinating, and scheduling a therapeutic program for all age/ability levels of the exceptional child in the community.
  • The specialist organizes, instructs individuals or groups in arts and crafts, low organized games, team sports, individual sports and other recreational activities that can be modified to their abilities.
  • Supervises subordinate personnel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the history and philosophy of recreation for the exceptional child/adult.
  • Skill and technique to instruct a wide variety of recreational activities for the exceptional child/adult.
  • Ability to recognize physical and behavioral disorders associated with the exceptional and to prepare recreational programs and actives to correct or compensate for these disorders.
  • Ability to recognize specific learning disabilities and to prepare recreation programs to correct or compensate for these disabilities.
  • Ability to gain the confidence and arouse the enthusiasm of exceptional children/adults in a group setting.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and work effectively with other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The following are some of the physical requirements associated with this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made by the City to enable an individual to perform the essential duties/functions of the position.

  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Work involves working indoors and outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Work involves frequent typing, walking and bending, lifting and stooping for short periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 30 pounds.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Recreation or in Education from an accredited school/institution and work experience in a recreation or education setting for the exceptional child/adult, or in a formal inclusion program for the exceptional child/adult,

OR

  • An Associate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, Recreation or in Education from an accredited school/institution and 1560 hours of paid experience working in a recreation or education setting for the exceptional child/adult, or in a formal inclusion program for the exceptional child/adult,

OR

  • High school graduate or GED from an accredited school/institution and 4680 hours of paid experience working in a recreation or education setting for the exceptional child/adult, or in a formal inclusion program for the exceptional child/adult,

AND

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator license issued by the State of Florida.
