Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Job Description

General Summary: Under the supervision and clinical direction of the Physical Therapist, assists in the provision of physical therapy services to the participants of the Carolina SeniorCare Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 1. Must have medical clearance for communicable diseases and up-to-date immunizations before having direct participant contact.

2. Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and have means of transportation. Must be able to meet Carolina SeniorCare's auto insurance carrier's standards for coverage.

3. Education: Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program with current Physical Therapy Assistant licensure. Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.

4. Experience: A minimum one-year experience working with a frail elderly population required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Adheres to Physical Therapy Practice laws.

2. Implements treatment programs designed by the Physical Therapist, collaborates with the Physical Therapist to identify measurable, functional outcomes.

3. Assists the Physical Therapist with participant treatments and obtains objective measurements for assessments as assigned.

4. Assists in developing and facilitating groups based on participant needs.

5. Observes and reports pertinent information about participants to the Physical Therapist.

6. Provides regular updates to Physical Therapist on participant’s status in order to assist with care plan revisions and discharge planning of Carolina SeniorCare Day Center attendees and other agencies that provide care for participants.

7. Under the clinical direction of the Physical Therapist, instructs other staff and/or caregivers on follow-through programs to be carried out by individuals other than the Physical Therapist.

8. Participates as an active member of the interdisciplinary team when assigned by Physical Therapist.

9. Participates in meetings as directed by Physical Therapist and supervisor.

10. Completes documentation as assigned.

11. Utilizes appropriate safety measures and body mechanics when providing care to participants or when performing other job duties.

12. Assists Physical Therapist in provision of and follow through for specialized shoes and braces. Coordinates with Physical Therapist for on-site shoe clinic.

13. Provides assistance to Rehab Aide as needed.

14. Assists in department maintenance and inventory control.

15. Recommends ordering of equipment to the Physical Therapist. Reports issuance of equipment to Physical Therapist.

16. Performs minor therapy equipment/DME repairs as directed.

17. Provides training on body mechanics and use of assistive/adaptive devices to staff, participants, and caregivers as directed

18. Adjusts schedule as needed to meet the needs of participants

19. Educates staff on services a PTA can provide, and limitations of services as dictated by the physical therapy practice laws

20. Consults with Recreational Therapy department as directed in regard to activity adaptations

21. Supervises PTA students following physical therapy practice guidelines.

22. Performs related, non-professional services necessary to maintain the efficient operation of the department.

23. Utilizes appropriate safety measures when providing care to participants and when performing other job duties.

24. Supports Quality Improvement efforts.

25. Protects privacy and maintains confidentiality of all company procedures, results, and information about, employees, participants, clients or families.

26. Participates in continuing education classes and any required staff and training meetings. Maintains professional affiliations and any required certifications.

27. Performs related duties as required.
