The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental services support individuals by promoting recovery, self-determination, and wellness in all aspects of life. DBHDS operates 12 facilities: 8 behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, or need substance use disorder services. DBHDS is committed to a life of possibilities for all Virginians. This position will work at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute, a 72-bed Joint Commission accredited State Mental Health Facility, located in Danville, VA.
The Director of Psychosocial Rehabilitative Services is responsible for directing, integrating, and coordinating the clinical and administrative functions of the Psychosocial Rehabilitative Services Department, to include Occupational therapy, Music Therapy, Recreational therapy, Client Education, Religious Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Peer Mentoring. In addition, the incumbent will be actively engaged in evidence-based program development.
Minimum Qualifications
Degree (grad/undergrad) from an accredited School of Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy.
Licensure and/or certification in one of the following areas of therapy:
Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Recreation Therapy, or Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy.
- Must be licensed (in good standing) or license eligible through the Virginia Department of Health Professions as an Occupational Therapist or a Physical Therapist. COTAs and PTAs are not eligible for this position.
Extensive clinical experience in developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating rehabilitative services to include strong working knowledge of recovery based, trauma-informed psychiatric approaches in the treatment of adults with serious mental illness, developmental disorders and addiction.
Previous supervisory experience.
Valid driver's license in good standing, which must remain valid throughout employment.
This position will also require:
Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy, Physical Therapy, or Music Therapy.
Thorough working knowledge of other disciplines within the department; must have direct supervision and performance management experience; advanced level of clinical skills; ability to conceptualize, interpret, and integrate department services into the facility's organizational context; ability to independently solve problems, make decisions and prioritize work to effectively perform job responsibilities; ability to plan, organize, supervise and lead the activities of an interdisciplinary department; ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with all levels of people inside and outside the facility. Must have thorough knowledge of recovery based-trauma informed care and evidence-based practices.
Additional Considerations
Experience working as an Art or Music Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist or Recreation Therapist in a psychiatric, healthcare facility, acute care, long-term or correctional setting.
Veterans and people with National Service.
Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
