NMC is currently recruiting a Pulmonary Function Technologist (Respiratory Therapist) in Respiratory Therapy (Pulmonology Clinic). The position is part-time (40 hours bi-weekly), generally M-F 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.. There is an opportunity to hold a part-time Respiratory Therapist position in addition to the PFT role, to create a full-time position (72 hours bi-weekly).

Pulmonary Function Technologist (Respiratory Therapist)

JOB SUMMARY: The Pulmonary Function Technologist (PFT) independently provides all modes of pulmonary function testing, and other invasive procedures, as ordered by a physician while maintaining daily operations of the bronchoscopy in the outpatient lab.

PREREQUISITES:

Education: Graduate from an accredited Respiratory Program. Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in Vermont. Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist. Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist, preferred.

Certifications: Current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP

Experience: Two years of experience in a PFT lab preferred. Bronchoscopy experience preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports To: Respiratory Therapy Manager

Other Contacts: Patients and their families, Physicians, public, students and Hospital employees.

SCOPE:

Machinery or Equipment Used: Nebulizer equipment, etco2 monitors, pulse oximeters, bag-valve mask manual resuscitators, pulmonary function testing equipment, pressure manometers, oxygen analyzers, regulators for therapeutic gases, humidifiers, blood gas and pH analyzers, suction equipment, and electrocardiographs.

Physical Demands: Good manual dexterity, and mobility is necessary; repetitive physical effort of lifting, pushing, pulling and walking briskly.

Working Conditions: Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne disease. Frequent exposure to infectious respiratory organisms. Office and storage space is limited and work in special care areas is demanding and stressful. Due to the size of the department, extra hours on short notice may be assigned in order to maintain adequate staffing of clinical responsibilities.

Required Protective Equipment: Lab coats, masks, face and eye protection. Sterile and non-sterile gloves and aprons.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Conduct pulmonary function tests (PFTs) on patients to measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange.

Calibrate and maintain diagnostic equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Collect patient medical histories and document test results for physician review.

Assist in diagnosing respiratory conditions by analyzing test data and providing preliminary interpretations.

Educate patients on test procedures and the importance of pulmonary function testing.

Monitor and provide care for patients during tests, ensuring their safety and comfort.

Participate in regular training programs to stay updated on the latest pulmonary testing protocols and technologies.

Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide comprehensive respiratory care.
