MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A bachelor's degree, master's degree preferred.

  2. Have or eligible for New Mexico licensure in Physical Therapy.

  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL:To evaluate students, plan and implement corrective / preventative

measures to assist in the motor skill and sensory motor

development of children with disabilities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  2. Knowledge of handicapping conditions and their effects on sensory, motor, psychosocial, and cognitive development of students with disabilities.

  3. Knowledge of major theories, treatment procedures, and research relevant

to providing physical therapy services for children with disabilities.

  1. Knowledge of local, federal, and state regulations and procedures

pertaining to the provision of physical therapy services in the school

setting.

  1. Ability to select, administer, and interpret appropriate assessment

instruments and procedures taking into consideration the student's age,

developmental level, disability, and educational needs.

  1. Ability to assess the functional performance of students with disabilities

within the school environment.

  1. Ability to engage in consensus decision making as a member of the IEP

team.

  1. Ability to plan and implement intervention strategies using direct therapy,

monitoring and consultation.

  1. Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with education

personnel, administrators, parents and community members.

  1. Ability to explain the role of physical therapy within the educational setting.

  2. Ability to document assessment and intervention strategies and correlate this information to the educational goals of the student.

  3. Ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and modify according to a physical therapy program within a school setting.

  4. Order and maintain equipment and expendable supplies used in the physical therapy setting, including inventory and placement sites of that equipment.

  5. Direct therapeutic services aimed at the prevention of increased disability

where possible.

  1. Develop compensatory motor skills.

  2. Identification, adaptation, and adjustment of equipment as needed.

  3. Provide instructional recommendations to be carried out in the classroom.

  4. Assess students progress toward mastery of goals/objectives established in

the IEP.

  1. Provide supervision to any Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant providing services in the schools.

  2. Conduct assessment of students referred through the evaluation process.

  3. Project an over-all concern for personal appearance as it relates to job

performance.

  1. Participate in the IEP Process and provide written results to initial

evaluations and annual reviews and reevaluations to the members of the

team.

  1. Involve parents in the decision making process and the delivery of service.
