Performs all Respiratory Care procedures in the general and critical care settings; not limited to but including: Arterial Blood Gases, Intubation, Nebulizer Therapy, Stress testing, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Durable Medical Equipment, Oxygen Therapy, Ventilator Management, Patient Education, and adhering to respiratory departmental protocols. The Respiratory Therapist must have the ability to manage time effectively, sometimes work under stressful conditions. They must possess ethical judgment, integrity, honesty, dependability and accountability. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement or evaluate treatment.
Conduct intake assessments through interviews with patients and relatives to gather case history. Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records. Record patient's medical information and vital signs. Assess urgent and emergent health conditions using both physiologically and technologically derived data. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to develop, implement or evaluate treatment.
Perform emergency medical procedures, such as BLS, ACLS and other condition stabilizing interventions. Set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, pulmonary function testing, holter monitors EKSs, PAP therapy devices or aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment. Obtain specimens or samples for laboratory work. Obtain arterial blood gas samples adhering to universal precaution guidelines and able to interpret and relay analysis results to physician. Administer medications to patients and monitor patients response to therapy and able to respondaccordingly to reactions/side effects.
Educate patients and their families about their conditions and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises or the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.
Will use knowledge and experience to serve as a role model and resource person to the department, hospital and community. The therapist acts as trusted leader exemplifying the mission of the organization.
