JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Speech and Language Pathologist
DEPARTMENT: Speech and Language
REPORTS TO: Therapy Manager
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides quality goal directed Speech and Language Pathology (SLP) evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning to patients with cognitive, communication and/or swallowing disabilities to improve optimal functional level of independence.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides clinically sound, clear, written initial and ongoing assessments of patients requiring SLP services. Develops defined goals and treatment plans from the assessment.
Provides effective SLP treatments according to written SLP and interdisciplinary team treatment plans.
Serve as an interdisciplinary team member including but not limited to effective team communication, adherence to team treatment plans, coordination of patient rehabilitation schedule, providing SLP expertise to team functions and providing staff education.
Provides effective discharge planning regarding SLP issues, which may include but is not limited to patient and family counseling and education, recommending referrals of service to treatment team, home program development, and documentation.
Submits treatment documentation and charges in an accurate and timely manner.
Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Provides comprehensive speech and language rehabilitation case management which includes the diagnostic evaluation of patients with speech and language disorders in order to determine and provide the optimum therapy for the purpose of correction, rehabilitation, or referral to another service.
Manages the operation of a speech pathology unit which involves requesting testing materials, equipment, and scheduling, providing, and coordinating speech pathology service with other services in the hospital.
Participates in conferences with physicians, and individuals in other disciplines to discuss speech and language disorders of individual patients, to explain follow-up required and proper referral sources when patients with communicative disorders are discharged.
Confers with physicians, nurses, and others on the effectiveness of certain treatment procedures.
Trains and evaluates speech pathology graduate students from various colleges and universities.
Presents educational information to medical and paramedical groups at in-service and intradepartmental educational meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION
Master’s degree in Speech Pathology.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
One year of rehabilitation experience.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
Hospital and outpatient-based Speech and Language experience preferred.
