JOB DESCRIPTION:

Primary Purpose: Work collaboratively with campus and district staff to provide music therapy services, consultation, support and evaluation services to eligible special education students in a classroom setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Therapy

  • Provide music therapy services, individual and/or group within a campus setting
  • Develop a schedule of music therapy services to ensure compliance with student IEP and campus expectations
  • Evaluate student progress.
  • Design, construct, alter, and provide students with adaptive equipment and devices to promote student achievement.

Assessment

  • Assess students with disabilities and determine eligibility for services.
  • Identify and support IEP goals and objectives for students receiving music therapy services
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.

Consultation

  • Consult with educational staff and parents regarding music therapy.
  • Provide staff development training in assigned school to assist school personnel with understanding of the music therapy program.
  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.

Student Management

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the developmental level, interests, and needs of the student.
  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management

  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the music therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.
  • Assist in the selection of music equipment and adaptive material.
  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.

Administration

  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Experience:

  • One year of experience in the field of music therapy

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree in music therapy or related program

  • Board Certified as a Music therapist
  • Valid driver's license
  • Eligible for coverage under the District's vehicle insurance program

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of procedures, strategies and equipment used in music therapy.
  • Knowledge of proper assessment protocols for music therapy evaluation
  • Knowledge of how to provide and document services for students in alignment with students' IEP.
  • Knowledge of specific strategies and interventions for working with students with autism and other developmental disabilities.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

OTHER INFORMATION:

Working Conditions: Mental/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district-wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.
