South Bend Orthopaedics (SBO) provides specialized care for all musculoskeletal surgery and orthopedic rehabilitation patients, as well as those suffering from work-related and sports injuries. Founded on the principle of providing excellence in orthopedics, SBO has been serving the needs of the northern half of Indiana and southern Michigan since 1947 and functions as the Orthopaedic Surgeons for The University of Notre Dame Athletics Department since 1949. Services include joint replacement, sports medicine, upper and lower extremity surgery, pain management, diagnostic imaging, physical and occupational therapy. ResponsibilitiesJob Summary
Responsible for providing direct patient care based on treatment plans established by Occupational Therapist.
Essential Functions
- Carries out treatment plan as prescribed by physician and developed by occupational therapist.
- Operates therapeutic equipment and devices including crutches, walkers, exercise apparatus,
canes, iontophoresis, electrical stimulators, istodex, traction and heat/cold modalities.
- Documents care and other patient information for medical record including history, treatment,
consultations.
- Follow with department policies/procedures and regulations related to infection control, safety, quality improvement.
- Assists with exam/exercise room cleanliness, equipment maintenance, supply inventorying/stocking.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate clearly to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients,
- families, physicians, staff, and other customers.
- Ability to set priorities and organize patient workload effectively.
- Ability to assist in upkeep and organization of exam/exercise rooms, supplies, equipment.
- Understanding policies and regulations through providing comfortable, orderly, clean, and safe
clinic environment.
- The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to the job position.
Physical/Mental Demands
- Extensive physical activities including standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, bending, twisting.
- Must be able to transport/transfer patient safely.
- Able to lift/carry and move equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds.
- Occasional stress from dealing with workload and noncompliant patients.
Environmental/Working Conditions
- Primarily treatment/exercise room setting.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to therapy setting.
- Work may be stressful at times due to the demands of patients.
Education: High School Diploma, BS preferred. Successful completion of accredited COTA curriculum. Current state PTA license; CPR certification.
Experience: Minimum of one year experience, preferably in clinic setting.
