MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe. Role Overview: Entry level Respiratory Therapist. Renders respiratory therapy to patients as ordered by a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Consults with and aids other health care practitioners in management or prevention of cardiopulmonary disorders, with minimal supervision. Covers all patients except critical care inpatients (ICU and PICU). Key Qualifications: Patient Care Time: 70% Performs daily roles and responsibilities per departmental guidelines Administers therapy and medications to patients per LIP orders. Sets up equipment and ensures proper functioning and maintenance per department guidelines. Consults with LIPs to help develop and modify individual patient care plans. Provides complex therapies requiring independent judgement. Routinely checks patients on respiratory devices per departmental guidelines. Monitors devices for appropriate settings per LIP orders. Adjusts device settings through patient assessment, conducting diagnostic tests including spirometry, arterial blood gas, interpreting graphics, and capnography. Notifies LIP of current patient status for possible adjustments for optimal settings for each patient given the modality Ventilator, Non-invasive Ventilation, HFNC. Resolves patient-related problems and crises due to critical alarms. (e.g., loss of volume, high or low pressure, back up ventilation, device malfunction). Troubleshoots equipment problems per department guidelines before returning equipment to department for repair and provides alternate back up equipment if needed. Labels equipment appropriately if problem is not resolved, including date, nature of problem and therapists initials. Disconnects equipment per LIP orders Removes equipment no longer in use from patient rooms and returns to Respiratory Therapy Department work station. Patient Education Time: 5% Explains procedures thoroughly to patient/family prior to administration of treatment. Asks for feedback to check for comprehension. Record Keeping Time: 10% Completes Respiratory Therapy documentation accurately to maintain proper billing compliance. Records information regarding therapy, medications, patient assessment and education in CIS per departmental policies. Completes respiratory therapy handoff and indicates any pertinent patient information at the end of each shift. Safety/Infection Control/Care for Environment Time: 15% Maintains safety and infection control guidelines when delivering care; contributes to the upkeep of department. Follows all departmental and Center guidelines on safety and infection control while providing patient care and during set up, adjustment and disconnection of equipment. Informs Technical Director/Technical Supervisor regarding any emergencies that may result on inpatient floors or during medical utility crisis (e.g., telephone, gas, or oxygen failure).
