Job Summary

The Occupational Therapist in a Behavioral Health setting independently evaluates patients level of function and determines, develops, and implements individualized treatment goals and plans in alignment with the patient/caregiver goals. Determines treatment strategies and delivers Occupational Therapy services promote health and wellness, prevent injury or disability, improve and develop self-dependency and maintenance.

The Occupational Therapist works in collaboration with an interdisciplinary behavioral health team to reduce symptoms of mental illness through engagement in healthy roles and routines in order to improve productivity, cognition, physical, sensory-perceptual, psychosocial and emotional wellbeing in a variety of contexts and environments in order to maximize function in the areas of daily living.

This role encompasses evaluation skills and techniques, analysis of patients, and application Occupational Therapy to maximize the patient's functional independence. May work in an Inpatient or Outpatient Behavioral Health environment .

Key responsibilities:

  • Upon Physician referral, performs thorough evaluation of patients level of function. Performs evaluations regarding sensory modulation, sensory based coping skills, perceptual-cognitive motor function, and functional abilities of daily living. Recognizes physiological, psychological and age related changes in the patient. Consults with other Health Care Team members as necessary.
  • Develop an individualized patient centered treatment plan of care. Evaluate care plan on an on-going basis, revising as necessary in accordance with patients care needs. Establish measurable goals with the patient/family based on appropriate patient care protocols and critical paths in order to meet patient needs. Notify Physician of any changes in status or progress.
  • Provide regular clinical supervision to COTA staff members t o ensure compliance with established standards and to ensure continued eligibility for licensure and certifications.
  • Provide ongoing education and training for COTA staff members, to ensure appropriateness, timeliness and adequacy in the provision of treatment programming.
  • Reviews treatment plan documentation to ensure compliance with hospital and outside licensing agency standards.


Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Occupational Therapy required, Master's degree in Occupational Therapy or Doctor of Occupational Theory preferred.
  • Previous experience as an Occupational Therapist preferred.
  • Registered with the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and current State of CT Occupational Therapy license required.
  • For new grads: Requires Temp State of CT Occupational Therapy License; Temp State of CT Occupational Therapy license limited to 120 days. Failure to obtain State of CT Occupational Therapy license in accordance with State of CT Guidelines will result in termination.
  • Previous clinical experience with children, adolescent and adults with psychiatric or chemical dependency issues preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - BLS upon hire or within 30 days of hire
  • Able to coordinate and manage patient care needs recognizing issues that require intervention
  • Able to communicate effectively with patient, family, and team members to reach optimum patient outcomes.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English, to follow oral and written instructions, work varying hours and perform duties of position.
