SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST

POSITION OVERVIEW

Maine Indian Education seeks a dedicated and experienced Speech-Language Pathologist to join our educational team. This vital role will provide comprehensive speech and language services to students with communication disorders across prekindergarten through high school programs. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with Maine Department of Education (MDOE) and Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) regulations while delivering high-quality therapeutic services to meet our students' individual communication needs.

REPORTS TO: Principal and Special Education Director

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnose communication disorders and determine appropriate treatment methodologies
  • Conduct comprehensive speech and language evaluations in accordance with IDEA and Maine regulations
  • Write Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) and provide detailed assessment reports
  • Provide individualized therapy programs to address speech and language handicaps
  • Serve as case manager for students receiving speech-language therapy as the sole service
  • Schedule and attend IEP meetings at various locations, including MIE schools, area high schools, and Child Development Services sites
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to implement therapy recommendations in daily activities
  • Provide screening services to identify speech-handicapped children at regular intervals
  • Observe students in classroom settings as part of assessment and treatment programs
  • Provide information, support, and counseling to parents and families
  • Assist teachers in identifying and referring suspected speech and language impairments
  • Stay current with research and trends in speech-language pathology
  • File annual child count information and participate in required reporting duties

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or Doctorate Degree in Speech-Language Pathology required
  • Maine Licensure from the Board of Speech Pathology & Audiology
  • Valid Maine Department of Education certification in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Clinical knowledge of speech-language pathology practice, neurology, genetics, and pediatric development
  • Experience with assistive and augmentative communication (AAC) systems
  • Knowledge of hearing disorders, auditory processing, and related rehabilitation services
  • Understanding of related disciplines, including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, and Psychology
  • Strong knowledge of special education laws and regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations

  • Ability to read, understand, and implement education policies and procedures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and family consultation
  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills with educational staff
  • Ability to concentrate on details when there are distractions and work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication disorders
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards
  • Physical ability to perform necessary job functions, including hearing conversation in various environments

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position requires travel between MIE schools and other educational facilities
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear regularly throughout the day
  • Specific vision abilities required, including close vision
  • Must be able to distinguish sounds and determine sound location
  • Standard school environment with exposure to quiet and moderate noise levels
  • Duties performed primarily indoors with responsibility for student safety and well-being
