The Occupational Therapist conducts a variety of tasks relating to development, implementation and coordination of the occupational therapy program. In addition, the Occupational Therapist ensures the program is consistent with the educational philosophy and goals of the district. The Occupational Therapist is responsible for the supervision of all students within their assignment, is committed to the Atlantis Charter School Board of Trustee’s policies regarding equity, human rights and cross cultural understanding and reports directly to the Special Education Director or their designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited occupational therapy program with completion of all fieldwork assignments. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Occupational Therapist License Issued by the MA Occupational Therapy Licensing Board for Allied Health Professions and National Board certification required.
  • Previous experience working in a school system or other pediatric practice preferred.
  • Experience with related technology preferred.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to relate well to others.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the Occupational Therapist will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administrator may also assign other tasks they deem appropriate.

  1. Diagnoses and evaluates occupational skills as related to educational, medical, social and psychological factors.
  2. Identifies students eligible for services and develops occupationally based intervention plans based on student needs and evaluations results.
  3. Provides targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and occupational performance within the school environment.
  4. Reviews student information to obtain background information prior to evaluation to determine appropriate tests and to ensure adequate information is available.
  5. Evaluates student’s ability and formulates the student’s occupational profile through a variety of functional, behavioral, and standardized assessments, skilled observation, checklist, histories and interviews.
  6. Synthesizes evaluation results into a comprehensive written report which reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the educational environment: directs program development; and guides evidence-based intervention.
  7. Evaluates and monitors assigned students.
  8. Reviews treatment plans, and assesses student performance to modify, change, or write new programs to meet student needs.
  9. Maintains clinical records and documentation as required by law, Atlantis Charter School policy and administrative regulations.
  10. Conducts research to develop diagnostic and remedial techniques.
  11. Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure team understanding of student occupational performance strengths and needs, through evaluation, educational program planning, and service delivery.
  12. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines, offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans and intervention plans to achieve IEP goals.
  13. Manages groups of students while providing for a variety of learning styles and ability levels.
  14. Integrates technology to enhance student progress.
  15. Conducts parent and/or staff professional development workshops related to occupational therapy best practices when asked by administration
  16. Adheres to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect occupational therapy practice.
  17. Uses professional Code of Ethics and standards of practice to guide ethical decision making in practice.

  11. Responds to concerns and requests of direct reports in a timely, respectful and courteous manner.
