Occupational Therapist

Job Summary

A staff member who meets the definition of professional personnel in WVC 18A-1-1, is licensed as an occupational therapist, and provides occupation therapy services to eligible students.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substance which affects employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.

Staff members serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

Staff members have a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist in formulation of occupational therapy policies and procedures.
  • Plans, promotes, or assists in specific school projects i.e., screening, career days, etc.
  • Attends staff development and professional seminars and meetings to upgrade or maintain professional skills.
  • Conducts assessment and evaluations in compliance with county policies.
  • Provides evaluation of children to include developmental level, status of sensory-motor skills and other pertinent skills and determines need for therapy.
  • Evaluates equipment needs for students and requests needed equipment.
  • Provides therapeutic treatment for students on caseload as prescribed on IEP.
  • Writes goals and objectives for treatment in compliance with county procedures and policies.
  • Attends IEP/EC meetings and planning meetings on students evaluated or on therapeutic caseload.
  • Interacts with teachers and other staff members to integrate OT goals and plans into IEP.
  • Assists teacher to modify classroom activities, which promote motor development and allow each child to participate in regular education as much as possible.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with parent for follow through of OT goals in the home.
  • Obtains necessary medical background information on each child to include information necessary to fulfill legal requirements and Medicaid billing requirements.
  • Completes and submits Medicaid billing in compliance with county procedures and policies.
  • Provides training to appropriate persons regarding effective methods to aid students in class.
  • Utilizes a team approach to planning involving school personnel, families, and other appropriate persons or agencies.
  • Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other responsibilities as designated by immediate supervisor or superintendent.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and filed trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB).   • Assists in the preparation and adaption of instructional materials, for the purpose of providing activities and materials that facilitate student learning and performance.
  • Assists in training of staff, parents, and students in specialized instructional strategies and techniques being implemented for the purpose of sharing information and techniques used in behavior intervention.
  • Assists with data models alternative communication intervention strategies for the purpose of teaching students to communicate effectively.
  • Implements and models alternative communication intervention strategies for the purpose of teaching students to communicate effectively.
  • Implements and models social skill development techniques, including social stories, peer facilitation and peer training for the purpose of assisting in achieving academic, social, emotional and behavioral goals.
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students needs and providing a consistent environment.
  • Monitors and records data on academic and/or behavioral information for the purpose of measuring student progress in identified areas.
