The Colorado Mental Health Institute in Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds and over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.Through our core values listed below, CMHHIFL staff is committed to:

The Occupational Therapist position works in the 24-hour State psychiatric hospital with individuals voluntarily and involuntarily committed for treatment. Patients receiving treatment at CMHHIFL have severe and persistent mental illness and may have traumatic brain injury, trauma disorders, and other complex dynamics. Each treatment team is multidisciplinary, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, addiction specialists, nurses, physicians, and mental health clinicians; Therapeutic Activities Department therapists (e.g., therapeutic recreation specialists (i.e., CTRS)) also provide therapy on each treatment unit. In addition, the hospital offers dietary, peer, and chaplain services.

This position exists to provide services as an Occupational Therapist (OT) through occupational therapy assessment, treatment, programming, and consultation throughout the hospital. Direct care services may be provided through therapeutic group interventions, specialized assessments, individual interventions, and community outings when indicated. OT theories and practices are applied to person-centered treatment, including administration of a variety of assessments including functional cognition (e.g., Allen Cognitive Disabilities Model battery), occupational performance, and other standardized tools (e.g., KELS, Sensory Profile) and non-standardized assessments (e.g., I/ADLs). Treatment planning and implementation as well as consultation and indirect care are performed in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams throughout CMHHIFL. This position is required to regularly document in the behavioral electronic health record (BEHR) for treatment, quality assurance, and billing purposes. The OT incorporates findings into occupational therapy treatment, completes individualized treatment plans, provides safe treatment, and provides services routinely on weekdays, select evenings, and possibly weekends (as deemed necessary). This position ensures the maintenance of equipment and supplies and engages in formal quality and performance improvement activities. This position participates in the established Occupational Therapy Internship Program offered at CMHHIFL. Other duties include:Primary Job Duties
Treatment Implementation:
- Treatment implementation is conducted according to Clinical Services department procedures, standards of practice, and ethics to ensure treatment quality, safety, and effectiveness.
- Utilizes hospital-approved low-level and crisis management techniques across teams. Treatment is reviewed, changed, modified, and/or terminated based on patient response to treatment or significant change in the patients functioning.
- May provide group and individual treatment, as well as community reintegration sessions and/or outings when clinically indicated throughout the week.
Assessment and Planning:
- Treatment teams may refer individuals to the OT for services, and/or the OT practitioner may identify individuals in need of such services.
- When appropriate, the OT determines the most appropriate assessment measures to utilize, develops approved interventions to meet adult inpatient treatment needs, and encourages the utilization of occupational therapy concepts in the patients recovery.
- Assessment develops specific treatment interventions to meet individualized treatment needs not addressed by the overall program.
- Collaborates in a multi-disciplinary manner for inclusion in the patients care planning. Treatment goals and objectives are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-specific (SMART).
Documentation:
- As an individual contributor to assessments, re-assessments, and treatment, progress, and discharge planning are completed within the BEHR and according to hospital and Clinical Services department policy and procedures, CO OT practice act, and national standards of practice.
- Documentation must be individualized, capture the progress of each individual, and be directly linked to specific treatment goals and interventions. In addition to EHR documentation.
- Contributes to budgeting as indicated to facilitate programming and activity needs.
- Consults hospital-wide for all OT-related patient needs and referrals.
- Consultation is rooted in discipline specific theories, frameworks, and/or models of practice. Consultative services may lead to direct or indirect care of the patient, and as such interventions are created, reviewed, modified, or discontinued.
- Consults with the multidisciplinary team and provides education, training, and modeling regarding OT related interventions for a group or population (e.g., wheelchair positioning for transfers).
- Consults with hospital-wide colleagues on a variety of client population matters such as occupational performance and the environment (e.g., DME and shower room access). This position may help contribute to coordinating and facilitating hospital-wide activities and training.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Other duties as assigned include hospital-wide ad hoc activities, milieu support, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
- Current, valid Colorado State licensure or certification related to the work assignment
- One (1) year of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Special Qualifications:- Must possess and maintain an unencumbered OT license to practice in CO via the CO Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). Must obtain a CO OT license before hire.
- Due to the juvenile population served at the MHI facilities, incumbents of this position must be at least 21 years of age
Preferred Qualification:
- Graduated from an ACOTE accredited program with a degree in occupational therapy.
Experience working as a licensed Occupational Therapist with the adult SMI (or SPMI) population in civil and/or forensic inpatient treatment settings.
Experience with the recovery model and trauma-informed care approaches (preferred).
Experience working with the adult population of people with mental illness diagnoses and/or other brain disorders (e.g., dementia, I/DD, history of TBI) who also had co-occurring physical conditions compromising their functional mobility.

- Travel- May travel to attend training, court hearing, patients to appointment and other related activities
- 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hires, and an Annual influenza vaccination

- Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicants prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
