Mental Health Counselor-Jr/Sr High

Beginning 2025-2026

Position Overview: As a Junior/Senior High Mental Health Counselor, you will play a crucial role in supporting the social, emotional, and mental well-being of students in grades 7-12. You will provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and prevention programs to address a wide range of mental health concerns and promote a positive school environment conducive to learning and growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to address students' emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, parents, and administrators to develop intervention strategies and support plans for students.
  • Provide crisis intervention and mental health support to students experiencing acute emotional distress or trauma.
  • Conduct assessments and screenings to identify mental health concerns and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Implement prevention programs and workshops on topics such as stress management, bullying prevention, and substance abuse.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and collaborate with outside mental health professionals as needed.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student assessments, interventions, and progress.
  • Prepare reports for school administration and relevant stakeholders as needed.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Stay current on best practices in school counseling and mental health treatment modalities.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to address students' needs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss student progress and interventions.
  • Ability to build rapport with students, families, and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with other care providers in the school within a multi-tiered system of support to address student needs.

Advocacy:

  • Advocate for students' needs and rights within the school and community.
  • Assist families in navigating school systems and accessing resources.
  • Understanding of cultural competency and diversity in the school environment.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or related field.
  • State of Iowa licensure or certification as a School Counselor or Licensed Professional Counselor.
  • Experience working with adolescents in a school or clinical setting.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development, mental health issues, and trauma-informed care.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and crisis intervention skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse student population and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and self-care practices.
