JOB TITLE: Speech-Language Pathologist JOB SUMMARY : Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education, this individual will assess, develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) in the area of speech and language therapy for children with communicative handicaps. This will include making the necessary physical arrangements at each school site for program implementation, arrange suitable schedules for speech and language screening and therapy, and establish a record keeping system for maintaining student records in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 185-day contracted work year Salary based on education and experience REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS : Education: Master's Degree or higher in speech-language pathology Degree program must be accredited by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association's Council on Academic Accreditation. Credentials : Language, Speech and Hearing Services Credential or Language, Speech and Hearing and Audiology Credential, or Language, Speech and Hearing including Special Class Authorization Credential, or Language, Speech and Hearing and Audiology including Special Class Authorization Credential Experience : One (1) year in professional speech and language therapy services (preferred.) Experience with a variety of disorders and age ranges in order to facilitate assessment and coordination of results with family and professional staff. Successful experience in monitoring compliance with legal regulations. Personal and Professional Qualifications : Ability to relate positively to children and instill in them a desire to improve. Ability to relate positively to parents. Ability to work with supervisors, teachers and school personnel in a professional and efficient manner. Interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal direction and supervision. Knowledge of and willingness to stay abreast of current trends, innovations and practices in special education. Must posses a private vehicle, a valid California driver's license and carry current automobile insurance. Fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice. Bilingual skills are desirable but not required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION : Screen students to determine those who need speech and language therapy. Obtain permission for appropriate diagnostic testing and administer tests to determine if handicapping conditions exist. Work directly with other assessment personnel in evaluating students' needs. Re-evaluate students within special education programs as needed. Consult with appropriate personnel regarding assessment findings and recommendations. Participate in the writing of each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Administer applicable diagnostic tests to determine whether students' needs have been met, i.e. IEP goals and objectives of speech and language therapy. If IEP goals and objectives have not been achieved, implement alternate program (s) or make appropriate referrals. Dismiss students when communicative needs have been met. Exchange pertinent information with teachers regarding children who will be scheduled for speech and language therapy. Schedule students for speech and language therapy; provide speech and language therapy as scheduled. Offer suggestions for teacher consideration of speech and language activities which might be beneficial for children exhibiting communicative disorders. Make referrals to school personnel and other professional personnel when applicable. Select and implements necessary instructional materials and equipment for therapy activities. Select and/or develop speech, language, and hearing assessment instruments and materials. Interpret test results and recommend therapeutic procedures in conference and a formal written report. Keep student records in accordance with the regulations of the SELPA, the State Department of Education, and Federal government. Ensure that the speech and language program is in accord with local district policy. Provide in-service training for teachers and parents when the need is indicated. Work collaboratively or on a consult basis with general education teachers, special education teachers and other staff personnel when the need arises. The speech and language pathologist will attend local school meetings when requested and scheduled professional staff meetings. He or she will also speak to professional, parent, and community groups as requested. The speech and language pathologist will perform any other duties as requested by the Director of Special Education. Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of the job description are the following essential physical requirement: Percent 1-100 5% Ability to bend and twist, kneel and stoop, run and crawl. 5% Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs 10% Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations. 20% Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time. 20% Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed matter and observing students. 20% Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. 20% Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation.
