Summary of Job Duties: The Occupational Therapist is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based hand therapy services to a diverse outpatient population. This role involves comprehensive patient evaluations, development and implementation of individualized treatment plans, reassessments, patient education, and interdisciplinary communication. The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced clinical skills in the area of upper extremity rehabilitation and uphold standards consistent with the UAMS Medical Center Code of Conduct, Joint Commission standards, and AOTA/HTCC/ASHT best practices.
Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Physical Therapy if graduated prior to 2002 plus 2 years of occupational therapy experience OR Masters degree in Physical Therapy if graduated prior to 2016 OR Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy; Licensed as a Physical Therapist by the Arkansas State Board of Physical Therapy or eligible for licensure.
  • Current Arkansas PT license
  • Interest in clinical education for physical therapy aides and clinical rotation students.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate with clinic staff, physicians, and the public.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination and demonstrate exceptional attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree or Doctorate of Physical Therapy
  • Current Arkansas PT license
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish-English) preferred.

Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care

  • Conduct thorough evaluations, including clinical assessments and standardized measures, to develop individualized treatment plans focused on improving patients' functional outcomes.
  • Administer therapeutic interventions such as manual therapy, splinting, functional retraining, and therapeutic exercise.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding diagnosis, home exercise programs, and post-treatment care.
  • Perform reassessments and discharge planning, modifying treatment as necessary.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation in accordance with departmental policies, HIPAA, and Joint Commission standards.
  • Maintain licensure and uphold clinical standards in line with HTCC, ASHT, and AOTA guidelines.

Education / Advocacy

  • Participate in the education and mentorship of students, residents, and support staff.
  • Provide in-service training, contribute to continuing education efforts, and assist in the development of clinical protocols.
  • Engage in community education or interdisciplinary initiatives related to occupational therapy and hand health.

Quality Improvement / Collaboration

  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
  • Participate in performance improvement projects, clinical audits, or departmental meetings to enhance care delivery.
  • Stay current with evidence-based practices and contribute to ongoing development of clinical programs.

May perform other duties as assigned

  • Includes participation in staff meetings, continuing education, documentation audits, protocol updates, and other duties that support departmental operations.
