Location: Set within an urban empowerment zone just south of Downtown Los Angeles, The Accelerated Schools are located at 4000 S. Main Street in Los Angeles.

Demographics: The Accelerated School serves approximately 700 students in grades TK-8 and Wallis Annenberg High School serves approximately 500 students in grades 9-12: Accelerated Charter Elementary School (ACES) serves approximately 500 students in grades TK-6. 94% Latino and 97% economically disadvantaged.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Special Education Administrator, screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities; monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student issues, needs and progress; meet, consult and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning the speech and other communication needs and issues of students.

Responsibilities & Duties:

The following duties are typical of this classification:

Screen, evaluate and provide therapy, speech correction and special training to students with a variety of communication disabilities; provide individual and group treatment and instruction to students with various speech disabilities; establish and maintain treatment and therapeutic goals and objectives to improve student communication skills and enhance learning.

Monitor, assess and adjust therapy in response to student issues, needs and progress; administer, score and interpret diagnostic tests to identify language, speech, hearing and other communication needs of students; place students in appropriate treatment and therapeutic programs; develop and implement remedial strategies, goals, objectives, schedules and techniques; present assessment results during IEP team meetings.

Meet and confer with parents, staff, faculty, administrators and others concerning speech and other communication needs and issues of students; respond to parent requests; update parents concerning student progress; resolve therapeutic issues and conflicts in a proper and timely manner.

Assist teachers in screening referrals for speech therapy; observe and assess student conditions, diagnose speech problems and recommend student placement in appropriate school, special education and other programs; determine eligibility for services and therapy; follow up to assure students receive appropriate services.

Provide consultation and technical assistance to students, parents, staff, administrators and outside agencies concerning speech and other communication disabilities, therapy, instruction and related activities; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning plans, issues, problems, strategies, goals, objectives, principles, practices, techniques and procedures.

Review and analyze student assessments and records; identify, diagnose and formulate educational, treatment and development plans and strategies for various communication disabilities and other student issues; coordinate and oversee therapeutic student drills, exercises, practices and assignments; work with individual students to correct or minimize speech disabilities.

Provide recommendations to parents concerning methods for enhancing the communication and educational progress of students; refer parents to community resources, health agencies and outside therapy services as appropriate.

Coordinate the speech therapy program with other school programs and services; report educational and therapeutic progress of students to school personnel.

Prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to students, disabilities, assessments, therapy, progress and assigned activities.

Communicate with parents, staff, administrators, faculty and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns;

Operate a variety of office and instructional equipment including a computer and assigned software; utilize assistive technology devices; drive a vehicle to conduct work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced-level diagnostic and clinical procedures, tests and equipment used in treatment of speech and language disorders.

Computer operation, applicable hardware and software associated with adaptive and speech and language technology.

Augmentative communication devices for students with severe handicaps.

Assessment theories, practices and techniques utilized for integration of students with special education needs.

Create and implement activities to achieve improvements in student language and speech deficiencies.

Technical aspects of the communications deficiency field.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Safe practices in classroom activities.

Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs.

Curriculum, goals and objectives of the department.

Operation of office machines including computer equipment and specified software.

Record-keeping techniques.

Applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. :

Evaluate, plan and implement goals and objectives to meet the communication needs of individual students.

Conduct full-scale language and speech testing and assessment.

Provide speech and language therapy.

Learn and utilize adaptive technology and program electronic communication aids.

Evaluate, implement and develop procedures and programs to diagnose and assist in the diagnosis of deficient communication.

Understand and relate to children with special needs.

Monitor and evaluate student progress.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Prepare and deliver oral presentations.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Operate a computer terminal to enter data, maintain records and generate reports.

Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Operate specialized testing and diagnostic equipment.

Sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Requirements:

Valid California Speech License

Spanish Language Fluency Preferred.

Compensation:

$93,600-$110,000.

11-month position

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time 11 month position, working 40 hours per week, including instructional time, planning, professional development, and other duties.
