Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Associate's degree and 3 years of respiratory care experience required. Maximum weight of 225 pounds when fully clothed. Must be able to lift a patient weighing 250 pounds onto a stretcher or infant in an incubator, carry for a minimum of 50 feet, and load into an aircraft or ground ambulance (with the help of another provider).

Certification, Licenses or Registration Required:

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association. Respiratory Care Practitioner license from the Mississippi Department of Health. Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the National Board for Respiratory Care. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) from the American Heart Association required post-hire within 90 days.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to assess and treat injuries and disease for pediatric and neonatal patients. Knowledge of agents, equipment, procedures, and techniques for the provision of emergency and critical care nursing for interfacility and scene transports. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to remain calm in emergency conditions. Ability to provide physical and psychological treatment and comfort to patients.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient assessments, formulates care plans, provides medication, and records all care delivered during transport in line with protocols.
  • Provides physical and psychological comfort to patients. Monitors patient condition during transport and adverse reactions to drugs of treatment.
  • Operates and monitors respiratory equipment such as continuous and intermittent ventilators, medical gas delivery apparatus, incentive breathing/hyperinflation devices, environmental control systems, and aerosol devices.
  • Consults with assisting personnel in the provision of patient care.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are available and functional and reports equipment failures.
  • Promotes a positive image of UMMC by participating in community outreach programs.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance of patient care provided during ground and flight transport. Prepares and maintains applicable reports and documentation.
  • Participates in disaster preparedness and operational support to include EMS unit operations as well as supporting UMMCs role in the State Medical Response System.

(occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more).
