Speech Language Pathologist - Assistive Technology (Itinerant)
Job Title: Speech Language Pathologist - Assistive Technology (Itinerant) Reports To: Director of Special Education Classification: Professional Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Days: 188 Salary: See Compensation Plan for Administrative/Professional Pay Plan, Pay Grade 104 Contract: Non-Chapter 21 Date Revised: 11/15/2023 Primary Purpose: Responsible for assessment, recommendations and support assistive technology (communication) in conjunction with professionals from various disciplines. Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:
- Valid Texas License in Speech and Language Pathology and Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge and skills related to augmentative and alternative communication.
- Ability to provide professional development relating to augmentative and alternative communication.
- Ability to instruct, motivate, and solve problems with co-workers.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in itinerant settings.
Major Duties and
Responsibilities: Assessment:
- Assess students to make recommendations regarding the selection, modification, and implementation of low or high tech Assistive Technology.
- Collect and organize relevant data from school records, classroom observations, school staff, support staff, parents and outside resource people.
- Compile written reports or summaries of consultations in accordance with federal/state regulations and district policy.
Equipment Management and Organization:
- Maintain documents, files, and records (license information, usage logs, inventory, etc.) for the purpose of providing up-to- date reference information.
- Transport a variety of items (e.g. devices, equipment, supplies etc.) for the purpose of providing materials in the classroom or transporting equipment for repair and/or modification.
- Identify basic problems with assistive technology programs and devices and troubleshoot solutions.
- Repair assistive devices, peripherals, and request reinstalls of software for the purpose of maintaining equipment in a safe and functional operating condition.
- Adapt specialized assistive devices to individual student needs (e.g. adjusting equipment, keyboards, communication devices, configuring software, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing the communication of special education students.
Communication:
- Maintain positive and effective relationships with campus and central office staff and parents.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly (verbal and written).
- Uphold district confidentiality procedures.
Professional Growth and Development:
- Attend professional development activities as determined by SBISD for the purposes of receiving information related to performing job functions.
- Comply with state, district and school regulations and policies.
- Research assistive devices, computer hardware and software applications, vendors, consultants, etc, for the purpose of being knowledgeable on trends and recommending acquisitions.
Other:
- Must have reliable transportation to travel between various campuses.
- Attend ARD meetings as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory
Responsibilities: None Equipment Used: Computer, copy machine, audio visual machines, assistive technology, specialized student equipment, classroom based devices. Working Conditions: Mental Demands:
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Work with frequent interruptions.
- This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
- Physical capacity to lift, transfer and otherwise assist students with physical disabilities (ability to lift 50 lbs.)
- Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desk and other classroom equipment.
- May require occasional extended hours.
