General
The Recreation Specialist position is an entry level position within the Parks Department and performs a wide variety of assignments including organizing and marketing park events, city events, and assisting with the maintenance of the parks and related facilities.

The Recreation Specialist position is under the direct supervision of the Parks & Recreation Manager.

The following examples are meant to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
  • Assist and coordinate with the Parks & Recreation Manager in planning and preparation for all City sponsored events, activities, and City Park programming.
  • Act as primary contact for the City Ballpark and associated public groups by coordinating field schedules to ensure adequate time for proper maintenance, concession stand staffing, and public satisfaction with services available.
  • Lead and act as the primary contact on facility and program/event scheduling in the department's software system.
  • Market sponsorship program to community sponsors and manage ongoing contributors.
  • Assist with evaluating fee structures.
  • Track payments to ensure all accounts are paid.
  • Maintain departmental files, materials, and information.
  • Work closely with the Public Information Officer in the preparation and distribution of press releases and promotion of events and park activities.
  • Assist the Parks & Recreation Manager with grant writing opportunities as needed.
  • Assist Parks & Recreation Manager and/or events team in implementing special projects, fundraisers and events.
  • Follow rules and regulations to follow safe working practices.
  • Assist with general maintenance of parks and facilities as required to meet seasonal demand.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Parks & Recreation Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the general principles, practices, and procedures involved in the successful operations of a modern administrative office or department.
  • Considerable organizational skills in managing multiple projects under strict deadlines.
  • Knowledge of business, English, spelling, composition, punctuation, and arithmetic, as well as accuracy of proofreading.
  • Ability to perform duties independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Experience handling money.
  • Ability to organize and market City Park facilities.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to carry out general mechanical tasks.
  • Ability to maintain detailed accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the general public and City Officials.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and written with employees, public officials, and others as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common in City parks and facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations of City personnel policy and department procedure manuals.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Two years of experience working within a Parks & Recreation environmentevent coordination experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri drivers license.
