Duties Description Under the supervision of the Historic Site Manager and the Interpretive Programs Assistant, the Lead Interpreter will perform a range of administrative and historical interpretive duties at Johnson Hall State Historic Site. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Conducting tours of the historic house and associated property for the general public, school classes, tourists, and community groups.
- Assisting in delivering outreach programs to schools and other community organizations, special events, and programming at the historic site.
- Assisting with the supervision of historic housekeeping, collections care, and monitoring and maintaining climate controls.
- Assisting the IPA in developing and reviewing interpretive content to be shared through agency publications and on the site's social media.
- Assisting with visitor services, answering phones, responding to public inquiries, and communicating effectively with staff and site visitors.
- Assisting with visitor services, admissions, and revenue handling.
- Conducting research on the history of the site and its residents.
- Maintaining and promoting a safe working environment by applying appropriate safety practices.
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
No minimum qualification per Civil Service.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA in studies focused on Dutch History, Colonial and/or early American History, Native American or African American studies.
- Experience conducting historical research and delivering interpretation to diverse audiences.
- Experience or willingness to deliver living history interpretation preferred
- Experience working or volunteering in a museum or other cultural institution.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
- Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as with others.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
- Must possess proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor, including medium-heavy lifting and using step ladders.
