TITLE 1 MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST
Major Functions:
Title 1 Mental Health Therapist will perform clinical assessments and provide treatment services to include individual psychotherapy sessions to students using evidence-based modalities, active case management, care coordination, advocacy, and coordination of linkages to other appropriate district and community service providers/agencies as they are needed. Title I Mental Health Therapist will specifically work with Title 1 students, families, and stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete intake and psychosocial assessment of students referred for DCS Mental Health Services in school-based setting and provide tentative psychiatric diagnoses
Provide short term, solution focused therapy and individual counseling to students referred for assistance with social and emotional issues that present in the school setting
Assess individual/family needs and make appropriate referrals as deemed necessary to assist students and families
Complete DCS risk assessments tool in the instance of reported suicidal/homicidal ideation present in students, and wellness checks to monitor mental health status as needed
Develop individualized safety plans when individual/family/school safety were of concern or pertinent factors
Coordinate with appropriate outside agencies when reports of abuse/neglect/exploitation are reported
Assist with coordination of admission and/or discharge planning for students in need of acute inpatient psychiatric services
Assist with the coordination of mental health trainings for school, district employees, and parents/guardians
Participate in consultative practices with DCS employee/staff in response to mental health concerns that present during school hours (only on emergency/crisis basis)
Consult with parents/staff/administrators to provide thorough explanation of service options within the district and throughout the community
Maintain caseload, records, and documentation for each assigned school
Initiate and maintain open communication with parent/guardians of students on caseload
Develop individualized treatment plans to address identified problems by setting individualized goals and objectives
Participate in pertinent meetings regarding assigned students' wellbeing and education (i.e. IEP Meetings, 504 Meetings, Disciplinary Hearings, etc)
Minimum Requirements:
The Mental Health Therapist will need to have at least a Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work or a related field of practice and a professional license from a State Board of Examiners in Social Work and Marriage and Family Counseling, Licensed Professional Counselors, or The Mississippi State Board of Psychology. The mental health therapist should have good communication skills, both oral and written. A good knowledge of CPR and first aid, as well as medical and psychological terminology is required. Experience working with mental health patients and families is preferred but not required.
