The current vacancy is for five (5) hours per day, nine (9) months per school year. The eligibility list being established will be used to fill the current vacancy and future vacancies that may occur within one (1) year. The eligibility list is also used to hire substitutes for this classification.
BASIC POSITION INFORMATION
Under general supervision, assist in providing speech therapy services to identified students in accordance with Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals; perform a variety of duties in support of student case management services; maintain records and documentation on students; perform related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
A Speech Language Pathology Assistant participates in and collaborates as a member of an educational team by assisting in providing student speech therapy services to special needs students in accordance with the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Incumbents work under the supervision of the credentialed Director of Special Education in developing and providing services for individual students to improve their academic performance. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.
Assist in providing student speech therapy services according to Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and treatment plans developed by special education administration. E Assist with conducting speech-language screenings, using appropriate prescribed techniques and devices; confer with management regarding student progress. E Assist with the development of IEP goals and objectives for assigned students. E Attend IEP meetings for assigned students, present findings and recommendations, as approved by designated management; maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information. E Provide assistance to educational staff as a case management team member through consultation, training and individual and group activities. E Document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives by preparing charts, records, graphs, or other means of documentation. E Prepare therapy materials and equipment for use in the classroom including therapy activities such as picture cards, worksheets and audio equipment. E Adapt or modify instructional materials as determined by student needs for teacher use in the classroom. E Lift and position students into and out of orthopedic equipment and adjust equipment. E Observe and control behavior and interaction of students according to approved procedures; utilize positive restraint techniques according to established procedures as necessary. E Inspect, maintain and operate augmentative communication devices and equipment. E Perform a variety of general support duties such as maintaining records, files and preparing reports related to assigned students. E Drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work. E Attend a variety of meetings, workshops, and in-service training to maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of Speech-Language Pathology.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF: Speech and Language Development theories and practices. Language, articulation, and hearing disorders. General methods and techniques of individual and group speech therapy. Principles of child development and behavior. Operation and maintenance of augmentative communication devices and equipment. Phonetics. Record keeping and basic report preparation techniques. Health and safety regulations. Laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned programs and activities. Technical aspects of the field of specialty. First aid techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Proper methods of lifting and positioning students in and out of orthopedic equipment. ABILITY TO: Assist in providing speech therapy services for identified students according to IEP goals. Assist with conducting speech-language screenings. Operate and maintain augmentative communication devices and equipment. Maintain records and prepare reports related to assigned students and activities. Monitor and assist in evaluating student progress. Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward students. Motivate and encourage positive learning patterns and behavior for students with special needs. Observe and manage the behavior of students according to approved procedures. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information. Administer first aid or necessary physical assistance to ill or distressed students. Attend to the hygienic and physical needs of students. Lift and position students into and out of orthopedic equipment and adjust equipment. Interpret, apply and explain laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities. Understand and work within the scope of authority. Observe health and safety regulations. Demonstrate adaptability to changing circumstances and priorities within the learning environment. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Education and Training
Associate of Arts degree and a certificate of completion of a Speech Language Pathology Assistant Program.
Experience
Six months of experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment.
Any other combination of training and/or experience that could likely provide the desired skills, knowledge or abilities may be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must provide proof of current registration with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of appointment and maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license at the time of appointment and the use of a personal automobile.
Bilingual Certification: Some positions in this class may require the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing in a language other than English. The following are examples of languages, which may be desired for specific positions: Cantonese, Hmong, Khmer, Lao, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese. Selective certification in accordance with Education Code may be effected to meet this requirement. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Classroom environment. Driving a vehicle to various sites to conduct work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lifting and positioning of students weighing 40 pounds or less in wheelchairs, or other equipment, two or more staff members will generally lift and position students weighing more than 40 pounds. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate adaptive equipment. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Bending at the waist, kneeling, and crouching to assist students.

APPOINTMENT
In accordance with Education Code Section 45301, an employee appointed to this class must serve a probationary period of six (6) months during which time an employee must demonstrate at least an overall satisfactory performance. Failure to do so shall result in the employee's termination.
