Parks & Recreation Specialist Athletics

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the development, implementation, and assessment of recreation and leisure programs held in centers, parks, or other sites around the city.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates transportation, facilities, dates, fees, registration.
  • Athletic programming responsibilities include youth sports, adult sports, referees, coaches, volunteers, uniforms, and/or sponsors for a variety of events, trips, classes, races, and/or league sports teams.
  • Supervises contract employees, volunteers, and seasonal staff by prioritizing and assigning work, providing input on performance, ensuring staff are trained and follow policies and procedures, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment.
  • Assists Parks & Recreation department with researching and developing new programs and activities.
  • Coordinates payroll for contract employees by collecting time sheets, completing necessary forms, and submitting documents on time.
  • Assists with marketing of programs and activities.

  • Performs other similar duties as required

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Athletic activities principles and practices
  • Budget practices and processes
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Project management principles

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License;
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Failure to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 12 months from hire date may result in termination;
  • Ability to obtain Certified Pool Operator Certification (CPO). Failure to obtain CPO certification within 12 months from hire date may result in termination.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking.
  • Medium Work: Exerting 20 - 50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, and respiratory hazards, and physical hazards.

Required Experience

High school diploma or equivalency and at least six-months of advanced study or training, with at least six (6) months of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
