Director, Nursing: Ambulatory Care/PACU/PAT/ENDO (Post Anesthesia Care Unit/Pre Admission Testing/Endoscopy), ICU, PCU, Med-Surg / Peds, Women’s Pavilion, ED (Emergency Department), OR/SP (Surgery/Sterile Processing) , Inpatient Rehab, TCU (Transitional Care Unit), Wound Center

MAIN FUNCTION:

The Director is responsible for planning, administering and evaluating the operation of their assigned department(s). In conjunction with the Vice President of Patient Services / CNO, the Director is responsible for overseeing implementation of patient care via WCH policies and procedures, evidence based practice, acceptable nursing standards of care, regulatory agencies and the Ohio Nurse Practice Act. Assures that nursing care is implemented via the Nursing Process, WCH Nursing Philosophy and Practice Model which are derived from the Synergy Model.

The Director provides leadership for the development and implementation of departmental projects / initiatives and long and short term goals. The Director is responsible for the fiscal management of the department including all budgets and day to day operations. In conjunction with the CNO, develops long and short term goals for their department(s) promoting quality care and optimal patient outcomes in a fiscally responsible manner. Maintains effective communication with all WCH employees, patients, families, physicians and stakeholders modeling the WCH Service Standards. The Director, as appropriate, represents patients services in the absence of the Vice President of Patient Services.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Vice President, Patient Services

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

  • RN licensed in the State of Ohio
  • Bachelors degree
  • Current specialty related leadership experience.
  • 3-5 years current related experience. Works well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated initiative and project completion skills. Positive communication skills.
  • Committee/team membership. Strong customer service philosophy.
  • Maintain a current AHA (American Heart Association) Healthcare Provider BLS card while in this position.
  • Personal computer experience and keyboard skills

Operations:

Plans, directs, and coordinates operations of the department:

a. Staff meetings / communication sessions are conducted and documented.

b. Oversees the department activities, develops methods of communication and monitoring the off-shift activities

c. Approves unit schedule and vacation requests

d. Maintains ongoing effective and collaborative communication with the medical staff

e. Fosters interdisciplinary collaborative relationships

  • Is an advocate for patients/ family and staff
  • Takes appropriate action on patient/family/staff/physician issues and concerns
  • Collaborates with all hospital departments to meet the hospital's mission, vision and value statement

  1. Develops annual goals and objectives for unit; develops strategies for meeting the goals, communicate the plan to staff and evaluate the outcome

Responsible for fiscal management through the Capital, Operating and FTE Budgets:

a. Maintain awareness of hospital financial data, ongoing healthcare policies/ trends and their impact on department

b. Develops and manages unit budget, proactively developing methods to improve financial performance. Demonstrates ability to interpret financial data as a means to determine appropriate intervention strategy. Maintains awareness and understanding of financial tools available.

c. Assesses departmental needs in order to staff appropriately for patient needs while maintaining fiscal responsibility

d. Monitors equipment, and supply usage/ par levels necessary for unit operation

Customer Service

  1. Displays positive attitude. Treats others with honesty and respect. Speaks positively in all customer interactions internal and external.
  2. Assess customer satisfaction when rounding on patients and use appropriate chain of command for unresolved issues or problems.
  3. Use AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you ) to:
  • Optimize the patient’s experience by reducing the patient and family’s anxiety and increasing the patient’s compliance
  • Develop positive relationships with other departments to foster patient satisfaction

  4. Uses data to drive Performance Improvement: able to aggregate data and present information so that Director/ assistant manager/ staff can determine a course of action.

Unit Specific Requirements:

Director, Emergency Department

Responsibilities include oversight of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program, the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program and the hospital-wide Emergency Preparedness Program.

Director, Ambulatory Care/Endoscopy/Medical Outpatients

Works in conjunction with the OR Director to optimize care of the surgical patient.

Director- Program Director, Inpatient Rehab

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain working knowledge and coordinate training/utilization/testing of the FIMS (Functional Independent Measure System). Ensure staff certification every 2 years via computerized testing with 80% success rate.
  2. Maintains current standards of care and regulations/requirements of CMS for IRF-PAI to maintain unit compliance
  3. Evaluate and process patient referrals in conjunction with the Medical Director for all patient admissions
  4. Track census daily and report to Milestone
  5. Track 60% compliance for CMS with each admission and report monthly to Milestone
  6. Track and report 50% CMS utilization monthly to Milestone
  7. Report quarterly program evaluation results to staff, WCH administration, and Milestone
  8. Complete monthly chart audits for compliance codes, medical necessity, and 3 hour rule
  9. Monitor, compare and report to Milestone remittance advices for each payer source compared to UDS projected payments on a monthly basis
  10. Monitor and complete MD’s monthly time log. Fax to Milestone by the 7 th day of each month.
  11. Attend team conference on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays

Marketing

  1. Develops, implements, and manages advertising and other promotional programs in conjunction with hospital marketing department
  2. Actively participates in marketing activities to promote Inpatient Rehabilitation Services and other WCH programs

Director- Transitional Care Unit

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Q.A. meeting - quarterly
  2. Assures adequate and effective Team conferences occurring in an effective & required schedule
  3. Develops and enacts marketing plan in conjunction with the hospital Marking department, and other post acute care departments.
  4. Assure compliance with regulatory guidelines for patient decision making autonomy
  5. Responsible for assuring adherence to all ODH/CMS requirements for nursing home

Director- Women’s Pavilion

  1. Must be in compliance with Ohio Department of Health to insure licensure on an annual basis
  2. Continual update of Women Education Series including but not limited to prenatal classes, father classes, sibling classes, bereavement, etc.
  3. Insure Obstetricians’, Pediatricians and Family Practice all informed of changes to promote optimal care for maternal/newborns
  4. Insuring surgical care of the obstetric patient is complain according to AORN, AWHOWN and ODH requirements
  5. Maintain and monitor the required NRP education for all staff
  6. Explores and researches new products and new/recently revised evidence-based patient care practices to implement
  7. Facilitates availability of health information and patient education resources for staff to use in patient/family teaching

  9. Demonstrates professional growth by networking, attending conferences, participates in committees/unit projects an ongoing educational activities

  13. Women’s Education Services

Director- Wound Care Center

Additional Responsibilities:

a. Supports hospital efforts to maximize program reimbursement

b. Works with Revenue Cycle and Billing to resolve any issues or denials that may occur

c. Develops, implements, and manages advertising and other promotional programs in conjunction with hospital Marketing department

d. Actively participates in marketing activities to promote the Wound Care Center and other WCH programs

e. Works in conjunction with Physician Liaison to develop and maintain physician relationships in the community

f. Conducts sales calls to physicians and other potential referral sources

g. Explores and researches new products and new/recently revised evidence-based patient care practices to implement

h. Facilitates availability of health information and patient education resources for staff to use in patient/family teaching

i. Provides education to individuals, families, groups, and communities to promote knowledge, understanding and optimal functioning across the wellness-illness continuum

j. Ensure all Wound care providers are informed of changes to promote optimal care for the patients of the Wound Care Center.
