Recreation Aide

Under close supervision, assists in conducting recreation activities, organizing and coordinating special events for various age groups as assigned: assisting in maintaining and setting up recreation facilities, and helping the citywide youth sports program with scores and recordkeeping. This position is responsible for the general maintenance and cleanliness of the parks and facilities, as well as ensuring the security and safety of the visitors and the community, and performing other related duties as required.

The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to provide a representative list of the various types of work that may be performed. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job class, and incumbents may expect to perform other related, similar duties.

  • Participates in and conducts recreation activities; assists in supervising participants involved in recreation programs, organizes, and coordinates special events and provides guidance and assistance throughout the events.
  • Attends staff meetings, reviews current programs and makes recommendations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations, and maintains order inside the facilities.
  • Issues, collects, and properly maintains city equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in the preparation of rooms for activities or rentals; cleans and arranges tables and chairs to accommodate events and guests.
  • Opens and closes facilities.
  • Performs general maintenance such as disposing of trash and changing trash bags, conducting frequent sweeps of the parks and facilities, installing fixtures, cleaning and mopping the floors for the facility to function properly, restocking the restrooms, and performing janitorial duties.
  • Assists in conducting facility rentals to ensure the applicant or user complies with city policies and procedures.
  • Assists customers inquiring about programs and services by becoming acquainted with the city flyers and publications so accurate information is shared.
  • Assists in keeping scores or records for the citywide youth sports program, as needed.
  • Assists in conducting special events.
  • Assists staff in observing volunteers to ensure they are meeting city requirements, and makes recommendations to the immediate supervisor.
  • Develops participants and spectators interest, enthusiasm, and participation.
  • Assists as a chaperone at dances, excursions, or special events.
  • Participates in cross-training and provides back up to other internal staff.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with city staff and the general public.
  • Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Supervises and reports any infraction or incident inside the parks to the supervisor or law enforcement officials.
  • Manages centers for the community, reviews policies, and provides information to the general public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of : Basic rules and regulations governing recreation activities as assigned; general office procedures and protocols; department operations and services, rules, and policies; financial rules, regulations, laws, and procedures; first aid and CPR methods necessary in taking safety precautions; concepts in devising activities for programs as assigned. Ability to: Communicate verbally and bilingually so that that recreation aide is understood; work a flexible schedule; speak publicly to program participants; adhere to a work schedule and deadlines; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; learn and perform assigned tasks; prepare and maintain recreation program records as directed; operate standard office equipment; operate various recreational equipment; multi-task and utilize strong organizational skills; utilize janitorial supplies and perform facility maintenance; meet and deal tactfully and effectively with program participants; work in a group setting; de-escalation a negative situation; and exhibit strong customer service skills.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that may provide the required knowledge, abilities, and skills is qualifying. Experience working with the public is highly desirable. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable but not required. Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Class C motor vehicle operators license from the State of California. Must be 16 years of age or older. First aid and CPR certification
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS : The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this classification, an incumbent regularly requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus when performing and leading recreational activities. The need to lift, carry, and push equipment, and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more may be required. Additionally, the incumbent may be assigned to perform activities in an indoor or outdoor setting, and when assigned to outdoor work, may be exposed to all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold.
