The Clinical Speech Pathologist Fellow provides inpatient speech-language pathology services across a broad range of medical, surgical, and neurological populations within a rapidly growing department. This consult-based role is primarily focused on dysphagia evaluation and treatment, while also assessing and managing speech, language, and cognitive-communication disorders. Responsibilities include performing bedside swallow evaluations across all inpatient units, including ICUs, conducting and interpreting Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) studies in collaboration with radiology, managing speaking valves for patients with tracheostomies, and providing post-operative speech and swallowing care for complex patient populations, including head and neck cancer patients. Caregivers document evaluations and treatment plans in Epic and float across all inpatient service lines, gaining exposure to a wide variety of high-acuity clinical conditions while collaborating closely with interdisciplinary care teams.
A caregiver in this role will work 8:00am to 5:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform diagnostic speech pathology test procedures and evaluates communication and swallowing function of patients under the supervision of a Senior Clinical Speech Pathologist.
- Interpret and report test results to facilitate medical diagnosis.
- Provide counseling and education about communication and the diagnosis to patients and their families.
- Determine therapeutic plan, including need for therapy, frequency of treatment, focus for intervention, prognosis and duration of therapy.
- Select assistive speech devices to improve patient's communication, performs re-evaluation to determine progress after therapy under the supervision of a Senior Clinical Speech Pathologist.
- Provide observations about hearing and other behavior to help determine need for other services.
- Maintain records of all services.
- Communicate results and recommendations for improving communicative function to referral sources and outside agencies such schools and employers.
- Maintain speech pathology equipment and materials.
- Assist with planning, budget, service or project development, fee setting, purchase of new equipment or materials.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Master's in Speech Language Pathology
- Must hold or be eligible for a Speech-Language Pathology Conditional License (COND.SP) from the State Board of Speech Language Pathology & Audiology
- Must hold Conditional License in current state upon start date. Meets all academic and practicum guidelines established by the American Speech Language Hearing Association, for Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP)
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Manual dexterity and visual acuity to perform tests.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
