The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is responsible for administering therapeutic interventions selected by and under the direction and supervision of a Licensed Physical Therapist, and within the scope of the profession, the State Practice Act, Licensure and policies of UnityPoint Health for Physical Therapist Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistant is responsible for accurate documentation and billing as well as maintaining communication with the supervising Physical Therapist to inform a plan of care best suited for the environment in which care is provided. (ie: acute hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, in the home, etc.)

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Performs treatment/intervention as outlined by supervising Physical Therapist to gain expected outcomes based on patient/client goals including a collaborative approach with patient/family and health care team.
  • Utilizes of appropriate Physical Therapy interventions to produce desired outcomes.
  • Utilizes of appropriate documentation and billing to communicate progress and status to physicians, other healthcare professionals and third party reimbursement.
  • Works within supervision guidelines of a Physical Therapist Assistant in accordance to state licensure laws.
  • Utilizes critical thinking maintains responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
  • Able to demonstrate the necessary skills and competencies of a physical therapist assistant.
  • Keeps work area and equipment clean and orderly by maintaining and practicing hospital and departmental policies and procedures regarding safety and infection control.

Development & Patient Education

  • Performs as a member of the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication and quality assurance programs and meetings.
  • Continues professional development and involvement in professional activities that enhance therapy practice by sharing knowledge through networking and research.
  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient/family needs including age, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential and actual concerns immediately.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an Accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Program required.
  • License/Certifications: Current licensure in the state of Iowa and in good standing to practice. Must possess and maintain current BLS certification or obtain certification within three months from date of hire.
  • Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Basic Computer skills. Customer/patient focused.
  • Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
