TITLE: Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Student Services and Special Education or their designee (such as the Speech Language Pathologist), the Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) completes a variety of tasks designed to develop pre-language and language skills, oral-motor control for speech production, vocalization, and use of assistive technology devices for communication, working with students who have identified speech and language disorders as well as other disabilities.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conducts speech and language screenings using screening protocols developed by the Speech Language Pathologist. Provides direct treatment assistance to students; follows and implements documented treatment plans or protocols; and documents student progress toward meeting established objectives and reports the information. Assists Pathologist during assessments by documenting and performing clerical duties; prepares therapy material and/or equipment for use in therapy activities; and adapts or modifies instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities. Assists in maintaining student records, tallying data, preparing charts, records, graphs and reports; observes and reports significant behavioral patterns or other problems to the Therapist; assists in maintaining appropriate behavior between activities; and prepares various teaching materials such as charts, pictures, word lists, and other related items. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Associates Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Disorders, or graduation from a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Program; current certification as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA); prior SLPA experience in educational or clinical settings is preferred. Must possess valid drivers license and travel locally using own transportation. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities knowledge of speech and language pathology equipment, materials, and procedures; normal speech, language, and hearing development; language disorders and rehabilitation; articulation disorders and rehabilitation; acquired disorders and rehabilitation; learning patterns in children; student behavior management techniques and strategies; learning difficulties of children with special education needs; English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar; basic math skills; routine office procedures and record keeping; standard software applications. Skills-based competencies include interacting effectively with attitudes and behaviors of students; using a variety of screening tools and protocols; appropriately administering and scoring screening tools; providing effective implementation of therapy objectives; interacting and communicating effectively with children and adults from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Abilities-based competencies include working independently with minimal supervision; communicating effectively; operating a computer and using standard software applications; reacting with flexibility and sensitivity to changing situations; organizing and prioritizing work; effectively carrying out instructions; and maintaining cooperative work relationships.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to operate a computer and other office equipment; occasionally lift or move up to 30 lbs.; and position oneself to effectively assist student; Accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. WORK ENVIRONMENT: This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy indoor school office environment.
