A school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP) works with students to diagnose and treat speech, language, and communication disorders. Responsibilities include assessing students' speech and language abilities, developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs), providing direct therapy services, and collaborating with teachers, parents, and other professionals to support students' academic and social success. The SLP also monitors progress, maintains detailed records, and ensures compliance with educational standards and regulations.
In order to meet this responsibility, the Therapist shall:
- Provide appropriate speech-language services at the elementary level, preschool-grade 5(specific caseload to be determined)
- Evaluate referred students, administer, and interpret diagnostic testing, develop requiredreports, and present findings at Team meetings
- Provide intervention that is appropriate to the age and learning needs of each individualstudent and is selected through an evidence-based decision-making process
- Employ a continuum of service delivery models in the least restrictive environment forstudents with disabilities, and that they provide services to other students as appropriate
- Maintain liaison with appropriate community agencies, administrators, teachers, and parentsconcerned with the students
- Plan and develop therapeutic intervention goals that are educationally relevant and will beused in students' educational programs
- Facilitate in-service education and professional development for staff members, as appropriate
- Supervise and monitor the job performance of any assigned speech and language assistants.
- Monitor program goals by teaching and supervising other professionals and paraprofessionalswho are involved with the implementation of the intervention procedures
- Provide augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals withsevere expressive and/or language comprehension disorders, such as autism spectrum disorderor progressive neurological disorders
- Provide consultation and/or direct services to address student needs, professional needs, andsystem needs in order for the system to achieve its goals and objectives.
- Complete documentation as required by federal, state, and local agencies. Activities mayinclude Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, Medicaid billing, reportwriting, and treatment plan/therapy log development.
- Perform other duties that are consistent with his/her professional training that the Director ofPupil Services and Building Principals may require.
