Care for patients who have difficulty breathing. Respiratory therapists interview and examine patients as well as administer diagnostic tests—like measuring lung capacity—to identify diseases and/or disorders that might affect breathing. They implement treatment plans, which they may develop in collaboration with physicians. They are effective communicators who educate patients about treatment options and how to use necessary equipment.
Respiratory therapists address a wide range of disorders, including emphysema, asthma, and sleep apnea. They may also have to provide emergency care to patients suffering from heart attacks or strokes.
