Job Description
An Occupational or Physical Therapist is responsible for assessments. eligibility determinations, program development and implementation of services for preschool children with developmental disabilities. Services may occur in individual or small groups in classroom settings or community based settings. Services may include consultation with parents, staff and other agencies as required. Reports to either the Part B Assistant Director or Part C Senior Assistant Director as assigned.
Classification: Exempt-Professional
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Defines current levels of motor functions for children through screenings and assessment.
- Develops and implements assessment procedures unique to the needs of the child.
- Responsible for direct services to the student, supportive help to the teacher in programming, materials and information and direct services in the classroom.
- Provides consultation services as needed.
- Prepares required documentation on a regular basis.
- Provides inservice training regarding physical management and safety issues for the identified child.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION and EXPERIENCE
The position requires a Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate and licensure by the State of Wyoming. One year of experience working with infants/toddlers and/or preschool children with developmental disabilities or clinical experience with preschool children is preferred.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The position requires working indoors the majority of the time with only occasional outside duties. Working in confined areas at times is required as well as the ability to withstand various noise levels from groups of children in multiple activities. The position requires the ability to be alert, flexible and tolerate moderate levels of mental and emotional stress. It further requires working in occasional conditions capable of assessing situations and responding with appropriate precautions.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and ABILITIY
The position requires the ability to lift children or equipment up to 40 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance. The position requires extensive and frequent movements including: sitting, stooping/crouching, walking, jumping, running. skipping, galloping, stair stepping, balancing, holding, grasping, hand over hand, modeling, manipulating objects (twisting, stacking). cutting and bi-manual dexterity. The position also requires the ability to participate in various floor activities. Individual must possess an acceptable current Infant/Child CPR card and First Aid card or be willing and capable of obtaining each within three months of employment. individual must obtain and pass a tuberculin (TB) test within thirty days of employment. A physician's documentation that an individual is physically and mentally capable of working with young children is required for employees hired after January 1991. The individual must pass a child abuse/neglect Central Registry check and criminal background pre-screen. The position requires: knowledge of and the ability to interpret federal and state laws concerning the education of children with disabilities, the ability to communicate with children and adults, knowledge in the use and adaptation of equipment for children with disabilities, the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary tram (including the ability to integrate and implement special education recommendations), competencies in the administration and interpretation of assessment/screening instruments, the ability to develop, implement and document individual educational programs, effective organizational and time management skills and the ability to construct and maintain a safe and healthy therapeutic environment. The position also requires the demonstration of self-initiative in performing above responsibilities as well as the ability to carry out these responsibilities with minimal direct supervision. The position requires the ability o observe an instance where there is reasonable cause to believe that child abuse or neglect may have occurred and to report it appropriately.
