DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide will act as support staff to Recreation Activity Leaders in the supervision and development of recreation programs for the Community Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Recreation Aide is an entry-level classification in the Community Services Department. Under general supervision, an incumbent is responsible for acting as support staff for the Recreation Leaders in the promotion, organization, and leadership of a variety of recreation activities. Recreation Aides are also responsible for performing a range of clerical and administrative tasks to support daily operations of a front office setting.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Receives general supervision from Recreation Leaders and Community Services Coordinator. Incumbents do not routinely supervise others.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)
Assists with planning and conducting recreation programs and events to meet the interests of the community.
Assists with light maintenance of facility, grounds, and equipment.
Provides leadership in athletics, crafts, games, special events and programs, including tiny tots, youth and teen activities.
Maintains order among patrons.
Controlls equipment and supplies.
Collects registration/ reservation fees and maintains records
Provides support, as well as administrative and general custodial services at Launch Pointe RV Park.
Performs other tasks or functions as needed.
Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in preparing reports using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires both near and far vision in reading written reports and work related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper and documents weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. Required to work evenings, weekends, outside in elements, etc.
Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)
Education and/or Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Recreation Aide. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of a high school diploma and experience leading activities for children or teens.
License/Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver's license, and cpr/aed and first aid training.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES: (The following are a representative sample of the KAS's necessary to perform essential duties of the position.)
Knowledge of:
Recreation, sport and leisure program administration, management and delivery; recreation, sport and leisure program evaluation; coaching theory and practice; volunteer training, development and recognition; events coordination and planning; an understanding of relevant legislation, policies, procedures and rules; knowledge of emergency procedures, First Aid and CPR.
Ability to:
Take an active role in providing leadership and discipline to all ages; be creative and innovative with recreation programs dealing with children and teens; provide information and communicate in a clear and efficient manner; establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, supervisors, volunteers, patrons, public and private agencies, general public and special groups; maintain attendance records, prepare reports, activity calendars, maintain registration records, provide customer service; take direction from supervisors and implement directives successfully.
Skill to:
Operate an office computer and a variety of word processing, spreadsheet and software applications.
